Greta Thunberg donated her $ 100,000 prize to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to help him fight the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic. Greta had received the award from the Danish non-governmental organization Human Act in recognition of its activism against climate change.
Rather than keeping the money for their own initiatives, the seventeen-year-old activist used it to launch a campaign to support UNICEF's efforts to fight the epidemic and to protect children from the direct and indirect consequences of the virus.
The proceeds of the initiative will go directly to UNICEF emergency programs to combat the epidemic and provide essential items such as soap, masks, gloves, hygiene kits and protective equipment.
Although children seem to have been least affected directly by the virus so far, a report published by the United Nations warns that the epidemic is having a profound effect on the general well-being of children.
UNICEF wants to reduce the impact of the virus on the lives of the most unfortunate children, and to ensure that essential services continue during the fight against the spread of the virus.
Essential services include distance learning opportunities, mental and psychosocial health care, and specific health services for children.
