What these doctors did is incredible and nobody would have bet a nickel on their choice, especially knowing the diagnosis, yet they saved a man's life.
The patient was hospitalized after following alcohol poisoning.
The man was hospitalized in a Vietnam hospital. His condition was serious, yet doctors injected five liters of beer directly into his stomach!
Sounds like madness? Still, this technique saved this patient's life
15 cans of beer in all
Nguyen Van Nhat, a 48-year-old man, was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. To prevent his liver from absorbing large quantities of methanol, the hospital emergency room specialists immediately administered three cans of beer to his stomach.
Then, every hour they gave him a can of beer. The treatment lasted 12 hours. So in total they gave him 15 cans, which is five liters of beer.
Dr Le Van Lam, head of the hospital's intensive care unit, revealed that the patient's methanol concentrations in the blood were 1.119 times higher than the average limit.
Even if he stopped consuming alcohol, his body would continue to release it into the blood. And even when he went into a coma, the alcohol level in his body continues to rise.
Dr. Le Van Lam explained that alcohol is absorbed by our body in two forms: methanol and ethanol
Ethanol is absorbed by simple diffusion in the stomach and small intestine.
However, not all the alcohol consumed is oxidized, since a small part is eliminated with the breath, sweat and urine. Most, however, is metabolized in the liver.
The human liver first breaks down ethanol. This man would have lost consciousness when the methanol present in his body oxidized to form formaldehyde and later formic acid.
By putting more than a dozen liters of beer into the patient's stomach, doctors took the time to dialyze it and prevent formaldehyde from forming formic acid.
An unusual treatment ...
Emergency doctor Hans-Jörg Busch of the University Hospital of Freiburg explains that:
“The therapy of 15 beer cans is rather unusual, but well known. Perhaps the Vietnamese doctors had no other type of alcohol available. Much more important (compared to the type of alcohol used), is immediate relief and administration., Aged 48
