Crossing the borders of the United States requires some attention and making certain mistakes, even if in good faith, can sometimes be expensive. I discovered a personal expense for a 19 year old girl while visiting her mother in Canada.
Cedella, this is the girl's name, is located near Vancouver and one evening she decided to go jogging on the coast near White Rock, a few kilometers further south. The girl did not know she was close to the border with the United States and so, during her run, admiring the view, she unwittingly entered the territory of the United States.
Suddenly Cedella's run was stopped by an agent, things got even more complicated when the policeman discovered that the girl had no documents with her. The matter had become serious: after being placed in custody by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the next day she was taken to the detention center in Tacoma, Washington state.
Cedella had to stay there for two weeks before she could clarify her position and be relocated to Canada again.
Despite criticism from many quarters, US Customs and Border Protection did not apologize for what happened, explaining that if an individual enters the United States in a place other than an official entry point and without being inspected by a border officer, his presence is considered illegal in the United States, and is treated accordingly.
