Kanye West fans are calling themselves foolish on the Internet for expecting the rapper would release his "Jesus is King" album on Friday at midnight.
On Friday morning, West's official website still showed a photo of what appears to be a tracklist, accompanied by the title "Jesus is King" and the date Sept. 27, which many hoped to be proof his ninth album would be arriving in the early hours of Friday.
Despite that West's wife, Kim Kardashian, had been promoting a potential album release all week on Twitter, no new music was awaiting fans who logged on Friday.
West pulled a similar stunt last year, teasing the release of a project titled "Yandhi" for Black Friday 2018 before failing to drop an album that day and announcing several months later that it had been delayed indefinitely.
Popular memes shared in response Friday included images of West asleep, Joaquin Phoenix in "The Joker" and screenshots of the song titles from his 2008 album "808s and Heartbreak," which, as fans may remember, was also delayed.
"kanye after lying about 2 albums in 2 years" read one tweet, accompanied by a snippet of video of West sprinting away from the cameras.
"How Kanye is sleeping knowing he didn't release Jesus Is King," read another, attached to a photo of West sleeping soundly on a couch.
Another Twitter user shared a video of an argument in Walmart accompanied by the caption "me confronting Kim after saying Kanye’s album was dropping tonight."
As of Friday morning, neither West nor Kardashian had commented on the status of "Jesus is King." West is scheduled Friday to appear in Detroit for a traveling performance of his Sunday Service gospel sessions.
