In Indonesia, a woman was brutally whipped 100 times in public for having relationships before marriage. The diffuse images show the 22-year-old girl being punished for the severe Sharia law.
Dozens of spectators observed the brutal punishment inflicted on the woman and her partner in the Lhokseumawe stadium in the Banda Aceh region. Flogging can be considered an appropriate punishment in the Indonesian Islamic region for various crimes, including gambling and alcohol consumption.
In addition to the 22-year-old and her partner, who received 100 lashes, a 19-year-old boy was also whipped for having had a relationship before marriage. Banda Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that imposes beatings as punishment. Human rights groups have called flogging a barbarism, while Indonesian president Joko Widodo has asked to stop this practice. But the punishment - based on a strict regional interpretation of Sharia - has broad support among the five million Muslims of Banda Aceh.
