US President Donald Trump climbed the sumo stadium ring in Tokyo today to reward the winner of one of the most important tournaments in this discipline with a special "Presidential Cup".
Welcomed by smiles and applause from the crowd in Ryogoku's historic sumo arena, Trump was together with the first lady Melania, the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie.
Trump attended the meetings on the last day of the tournament, in the presence of 11,500 spectators: at the end, as tradition dictates, he took off his shoes, put on dark-colored slippers and climbed into the ring to deliver the winner, Asanoyama, the 'United States President's Cup', a trophy 137 centimeters high and weighing 30 kilos. Trump's visit to the Rising Sun, which began yesterday, will last until Tuesday. Tomorrow the president will be the first world leader to meet the new Japanese emperor Naruhito.
