National age record for organ donation. A 97-year-old patient who died recently in intensive care at the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence was considered suitable for liver extraction. Family members - respecting the wishes of their relatives - have consented to the transplant in a 60-year-old patient on the waiting list.
This is the second case in a few months, the Ausl Toscana Centro recalls in a note: the first happened at the end of April with a 93-year-old donor. The last episode "represents an absolute primacy in the Italian panorama for transplant surgery, as in 20 years there have been only three other donors in old age that have allowed to carry out a transplant", stresses the healthcare company.
"I would like to congratulate the local hospital coordinators and all the representatives of resuscitations, goddesses and departments of medicine, who with humanity and professionalism daily face the clinical assistance of patients also suffering from serious diseases that can lead to recovery, but also to death - says Alessandro Pacini, local donation and transplant coordinator of the Ausl - In this last case it is important to consider that a donation of organs and tissues, according to a will expressed in life by the deceased or cleared by the relatives entitled, can save the life of many patients whose only hope is a transplant ".
There are no age limits for donating, the healthcare company recalls in a note, and it is possible to express in life the desire for post mortem donation at the municipal registry offices on the occasion of the issue / renewal of identity cards, at the Cup offices of the 'Ausl or by joining the Italian Association for organ, tissue and cell donation (Aido), and sharing their choice with their family members.
