Would you ever dare to wear a shit dress? No, we're not talking about an ugly dress to see each other, but just a dress created with cow feces. Think carefully about your answer because, in the future, poop could become very widespread in making clothes.
This is at least what a Dutch designer named Jalila Essaïdi thinks, who understood how cow dung caused a major environmental problem, due to the growing number of herds in the world.
Jalila has decided to look for new ways to reuse these droppings, and has had results that are likely to surprise many. Working in his "BioArtLab", he discovered that manure can be used as a starting point to make new biodegradable materials.
The interesting thing is that from the excrement you can get both the base of the material and the chemical compounds used to treat it. The basis of the new material has been christened "Mestic" and is none other than the cellulose that comes from plants eaten and digested by cows. From the dung are then extracted also the acids that allow to create cellulose acetate, which is considered a sort of natural liquid plastic.
The end result is surprising, it does not smell and is perfectly hygienic. "It is not the first time that we try to solve the problem of manure, but it is the first time that it is considered a valuable resource", commented Jalila Essaïdi. It is probable that clothes made with manure can get to the market soon: the only obstacle is psychological.
