House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is demanding an investigation after a second migrant child died while under the custody of Customs and Border Patrol.
After being under the protection of CBP for a week, 8-year-old Felipe Alzono-Gomez died from sickness on Christmas day. Earlier in the month, 7-year-old Jakelin Amei Rosmery Caal Maquin died after being in custody for over seven hours. She reportedly did not receive any food or water.
Pelosi has had enough of the reports of children dying and is now calling for both Congress and the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the death of young Felipe.
Pelosi’s full statement:
“The tragic death of an innocent child on Christmas Day breaks the hearts of all.
We all have a moral responsibility to ensure all children of God are treated with compassion and decency. The death now of two children in U.S. custody is unconscionable.
Democrats call on Homeland Security’s Inspector General to immediately open an investigation into Felipe Alzono-Gomez’s death. The Congress will also investigate this tragedy and the heartbreaking death of Jakelin Amei Rosmery Caal Maquin, to seek justice and ensure that no other child is left to such a fate.”
Felipe’s death came just days after DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen faced questioning from Congress about deaths in their custody and couldn’t tell House members how many people have died under the watch of her department.
Following the news of Felipe’s death on Christmas, CBP said they would take on new precautions such as conducting secondary medical checks all children in their custody with a focus on children under the age of ten.
The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general is currently investigating the death of 7-year-old Jakelin.
